What Is an E-Exam?
An e-exam is an assessment and evaluation method in which exam questions are presented digitally, students submit their answers using a computer or another suitable electronic device, and the evaluation procedures are performed wholly or partly through electronic systems.
Learning management systems such as Moodle support multiple-choice, true-false, matching, short-answer, numerical and essay question types. Question banks, random question selection, time limits, automatic grading and detailed exam reports enable examination processes to be managed more systematically.
A secure and traceable examination process
Exam sessions, user logins, start and end times, submitted answers and system activities are recorded, enabling the examination process to be monitored and reviewed.
Examples of E-Exam Practices
Supervised laboratory exam
Students attend the central computer laboratories at the specified date and time and take the exam under staff supervision following an identity check.
Question bank and randomised exam
Different questions or answer-option orders are presented to each student from a question bank to support exam security.
Automatically graded exam
Multiple-choice, true-false, matching and numerical questions can be evaluated automatically by the system.
Open-ended digital exam
Answers assessing students’ interpretation, analysis and problem-solving skills are collected digitally and evaluated by the instructor.
E-Exam Process
Exam preparation
Questions, duration, permitted attempts, assessment criteria and exam security settings are determined.
Reservation
The student selects a separate date and time through the exam reservation system for each exam.
Identity and system checks
Identity documents, login credentials and the relevant course code are checked before the exam.
Administration and reporting
The exam is conducted under supervision, and answers, results and required system records are reported.
